I had a great time on the field trip and I think most everyone else did too. We read My Side of the Mountain which is about a young boy surviving in the wilderness alone and then we went to the forest and a couple of park rangers led us in learning how to build a fire with flint and steel, build a shelter out of deadfall and find wild edibles.
We picked up acorns, hickory nuts and black walnuts, chestnuts, persimmons, apples and crab apples. I didn't know you could build a fire using a cotton ball as tinder so I learned something today. It was 65 degrees and sunny, the perfect day to be out in the forest!
