A better Friday?

My husband has got the cold that oldest son had, then youngest son and then daughter had, so he's home today and he is keeping on top of the youngest to try and make him do his school work in a timely manner and not do it all late tonight and early tomorrow morning.  He's also going to take daughter to her guitar lesson today, which is weird, because since he's had to work bad work shifts (second and third) our whole marriage, I've always done 99.9% of the taking and bringing kids places.  I have felt like a single parent at times.  When the youngest was born it was not unusual for my husband to have to work 80 hours a week.  :-/

So anyway, today  I'm able to concentrate on work, trying to get it done.  I'm almost finished, thankfully and then since my husband is doing the guitar lesson, I'll be able to take a break until it's time for my oldest son and I leave for a concert tonight.

These kinds of days, even with the afternoon unexpected break were not possible when I was not gluten free.  I was too tired all the time.  

One advantage.

One advantage of the fact that we've all become audio book addicted in this house is that we don't have to worry about mispronouncing words as we hear them pronounced correctly when we are learning them.  I remember when I was a kid, I read the word misled as something like mice-uhled. until my 8th grade class was reading aloud and I realized it was pronounced miss-led.  Oh, yes.  That makes much more sense.  A disadvantage to my kids is that they might not immediately recognize the word in print.  I have been looking for vocabulary lists based on the books we like, but so far, haven't really found any.  I will keep looking though.  Another advantage to audio books is that, when you listen to a book while driving or working, it makes the time pass so much faster and it is easier to share books as a family.

Math Problem.

My daughter started her math lesson and got all the way to problem 25 (actually she's ahead and it's tomorrow's lesson) and then wandered off to make everyone a grilled cheese and some French toast.  While she's gone, I'm sitting here at my computer which is right next to hers, working and when my work pauses I look over at her screen and read this problem.

"Ralph can lay down a floor tile in 5 seconds.  Bob can lay down a floor tile in 4 seconds.  If both boys work together, how many seconds would it take them to install 450 floor tiles?"

I have some additional questions.

What is Bob's phone number?

What is Ralph's phone number?

When can they come over?

I have about 400 floor tiles that need to go down and I'm pretty sure no one in this house can put one down every 4 seconds.  :-D

It's no wonder it takes me so long to get done with my workday.  It takes me a while to get my email!  :-)

It's hot.

It's not spring yet, but it's already hot.  It's 79 outside and 80 inside.  The flowers are blooming and it feels like spring.  We were just sitting around discussing how we wish we'd have at least a little cold weather to cut down on this summer's mosquitos, gnats and ticks.  I'm not sure if that would really help. but that's the old wives tale and we'll take any advantage we can get over the bugs.  Youngest son has already begun his campaign to get us to put the pool up, but I'm pretty sure we won't convince my husband to do that but it sounds nice about now.

A conversation in the car.

Scene:  Daughter and youngest son are in the back of the car, eating Lunchables (which they rarely get), on the way home from the grocery store.

Daughter says:  "You know you can just pull that off"  indicating a piece of plastic wrap son has left hanging off the side of his lunchable.
Son does not reply.
Daughter says"  "Pull it off, it's bugging me."
Son does not pull it off.
Daughter says:  "Just give it here", takes it and proceeds to pull it off.
Son says:  "Do you feel better now?"
Daughter says:  "Yes."

Well.

We were stuck at home last week because we didn't have a vehicle and this week because the girl is sick and does not enjoy being home alone.  It's fine with me.  Sometimes I feel that we run up and down the road too much, so I kind of enjoy when I can't and I really don't have to make a decision about it. Sometimes making the decision about what to do is the toughest part of the day. 

Today.

Despite what I said about my son Monday morning, getting started on school early, he did it again.  He was working on school late last night and early this morning.  He didn't get enough sleep and will crash and take a nap some time this afternoon.  The clocks going forward tonight are not going to be good for him, but if he's tired, it's entirely his fault and he knows it.

We watched a couple of episodes of Monk last night and here's one of my favorite quotes from that.  He's in the laundrymat with his new Nigerian friend.
