The ups, the downs, this and that.

One minute I'm crying, one minute giggling.  I tell you, if it wasn't for my kids, this whole experience with mom these past few months might have finished me off.  It's been a period of mourning for what was; my home, my parents.  I miss my dad and I miss the mom I had even a few months ago.  She has changed so much.  I miss going to "grandma's house" with my kids and when I do go to the house which is now an empty shell, I cry every time.  I cry every time I even think of the house. A friend of mine wants to rent it and I do very much think that's a good thing, but it makes me cry again.    I would feel better if someone was there to watch over the place.   One thing that has gotten better is that I no longer cry every time I go see my mom, because she does seem relatively happy where she is and she's bonding to the ladies she lives with.  My fear is that she will drive her caregiver crazy (she's working on it) and get herself kicked out.  The caregiver says that she's never had a patient with this level of dementia who was in such good physical shape, so as to get up at night and wreak havoc and mom's level of dementia has gotten way, way worse since we took her out of her home.  We were worried that this would happen, but felt we had no choice in the matter.  It's been kind of awful.
Flowers in my mom's yard this past summer.

My daughter says that this is exactly like me.  :-)

Now onto the good things.  I got my Suburban back yesterday.  Yay!  I missed it.  So I got to go volunteer last night.   It was really great.  I got to hold and console a lot of babies and I am good at it.  The only thing that is difficult about it is my physical limitations/knee pain and not being able to kiss those little faces.  When I left, both of my kids (who are home) gave me a hug.  That's so sweet for kids their age, isn't it?  Then when I got back home, we watched Boy Meets World, season 1 or 2, from Netflix which is good for some laugh out loud moments.  :-)  Then we had our read-aloud time, which was pretty hilarious, .  My daughter was really tired and was reading some things wrong and I got to laugh at her the way she used to laugh at me when I was reading aloud.  The most hilarious was when she was supposed to say the demon's horns were 'glowing blue" bue she said "blowing glue" and totally didn't realize that she had said it.  Again, I did the kind of laughing where I just wheeze quietly, with tears running down my face.  Everything is more funny when you are tired and stressed out.

In other news, my son is now bringing 2 friends home for spring break next week and we are going to have to pretend for a whole week that we are neat.  :-P

Why I am thinking of quitting my job before finding another one.

Here's an hour in my life today.

11:14 Try and download 3 speech recognition editing jobs.

11:16 Get first download failed error message.
          And then second one.
          And then the third one.
          Start all 3 downloads again.

11:18  One job downloaded.
           One has failed to download.
           One is still working.
I go into the one that downloaded it to edit it.

11:25  I finish editing the first one.  I have earned 90 cents.
The second one has failed to download at this point so I click on both of them to
            download again.

11:27  Success with one of the downloads.
I request more work and click download on 2 more jobs hoping they will download while
I go into the next job to edit it.

11:29  The job I clicked on to edit finally opens so I can start editing it.

11:40  Finish editing current job.
Return to main page to see that other 2 jobs have failed to download yet again.
I have now earned a grand total of 2 dollars and 93 cents.
I try and download those same 2 jobs again.

11:46  One has downloaded.
The other one has failed, again.
I go into the 3rd job this hour and edit it, while hoping/praying the other job will
finally download in the background while I am working on this one.

12:00 Finish the third one and the fourth one has, miracle of miracles, downloaded.

12:10  I finish it and check my grand total for this hour .... are you ready for this, 3 dollars and 87 cents!!!!!

I could be doing some stuff around the house.  There's a lot that needs to be done.

Really great Monday.

Some of our friends from the homeschool group who this past year moved to Indiana, were able to visit yesterday.  I worked all morning and then we had a prom planning meeting and then we got to spend the rest of the day with our friends.  It was great.  My daughter got to spend the night with them in their hotel, so she had a mini-vacation.  My son and I came home and watched the episodes of Boy Meets World we got from Netflix while I painted art journal backgrounds.  It was fun although I had to do it the same way I've done everything for the last week, with a blood pressure headache.  Apparently my nurse practitioner in the local group practice left the practice and I had called for a refill, they referred me to another doctor who was apparently out of the country and his nurse referred it to another doctor who called it in to the wrong pharmacy.  After multiple trips to the pharmacy and a couple of calls to the medical center, I think maybe I will get the medication this evening.  Then, after a couple of days, maybe my headache will go away.  Oh how I hope so.

This morning when I picked my daughter up, I asked the girls if they had gotten any sleep.  One of them replied "More than we meant to."  I guess they accidentally fell asleep at some point?  LoL.
So with a brief and unexpected hiatus yesterday, we are now back to usual, I guess.  School work and my pitiful, piddling amount of work I get for my job.  One day this week whenever I can work it in and I don't have a headache, I am testing for a different medical transcription job.  Wish me luck.

****Updated to state:  So I went to the correct pharmacy to get the medication yesterday and they are out of it and can't get it until Friday.  The headache continues.

The Friday Night report, a bit late. :-)

Okay, so last week, the kids slacked off quite a bit.  My son did so because that's what he does.  My daughter almost never procrastinates her school this much, but she says she could NOT concentrate on math.  I understand the feeling, but she needs to learn that when it is down to the wire, you need to make yourself do it.  She did buckle down sometime Friday evening, but it was not soon enough and she was not finished at midnight.  When the clock struck midnight, we had 2 teens, a 10th grader and a 12th grader who had not finished their schoolwork and so had to ground each other.  They are so much tougher on each other than we would be and my son was grounded from books (!) both reading and audio books (torture!) and my daughter was grounded from drawing and from needlework.  They've both had withdrawal all weekend.  My son consoled himself with video games and my daughter watched TV.  I think it is interesting that they did not ground themselves from screens, but their screen time is already limited so maybe they were thinking about that.  I don't know.  I was already in bed at the time of the grounding.  :-)   Finally, yesterday afternoon, my daughter had had enough and did some of her school work for this week, finishing a third of it (she has a light load this semester) and doing enough to get some of her grounding lifted.  Whew.

They are such a hoot!

yes I drew flowers again.

I think there's some psychological reason I doodle flowers but what can I say, it helps me deal with my stress.

Some pictures.

What homeschooling looks like today.

Experimenting with writing in the background.

My 17 year old's hand next to my 15 year old's hand.

The blanket my daughter is knitting.

And even more homeschooling benefits.

There are so many homeschooling benefits, I couldn't possibly name them all.  The kids get more sleep.  They get time to exercise.  They get home cooked meals.  They get time to work on projects that they enjoy, which is good for brain function.  They score better on standardized tests.   We've all heard the statistics.   I won't go into all of the benefits, but if you want to read up on this, go visit Penelope Trunk's website.  She has done a lot of research.  You will find about how homeschooled kids are happier, leaner and score better on standardized tests and lots more.

This week I'm also thinking about benefits that our family's homeschooling has had on our extended family and community.  Because we've homeschooled, we have 3 smart, physically strong young people who are available to do things during the day.   My kids have helped my mom move twice lately, they've helped out at our church, they've helped my parents-in-law with tasks that they can't do themselves anymore, climbing on the roof of a shed to clean out a chimney (yes, my daughter is an experienced chimney sweep), fetching and carrying things up and down stairs and today, they are going to help install insulation in a greenhouse.   Yes, it's Friday and they likely have a lot of Algebra 2/Geometry to do, but we can extend that deadline to Sunday because homeschooling is flexible.  :-)

More read-aloud hilarity.

It might not seem funny to anyone else.  It was late.  We were tired and my daughter read "his voice was dripping with condescension"  but instead of condescension, she said condensation after which followed several minutes of laughing.  I did that thing where I just wheeze when I am laughing, which makes the kids laugh even more.

Fun times.

In the interesting category, my son's new boss in Mississippi called here today thinking he was calling my son's cell phone and got me.  I said that he had called Kentucky and was talking to my son's mom and he complimented me on what a great person our son is.  That made this mama smile.

In other, not-so-good news, my work now, after all the new training, working on the new system, is so, so not a success.  I don't really think there is anything I can do about it.  It is not my editing speed that is the problem.  The work is scarce, the jobs take a long time downloading and where I used to be able to request the next 100 jobs and wait and see if I got any, which meant I could do other things while that was requesting, I can only request 3 at a time now so I have to keep hitting the button requesting work.  Also, I used to could work in one system while trying to get work in the other therefore being as efficient as I could but now both are on the same program, just different sections and so I can't be in both at the same time, trying to get work.  Today I couldn't get much work at all, despite trying very hard all day long,  and what I did get took forever to download and so I ended up making less in all day long trying to work than I used to earn in one hour.

I don't know what I am going to do.  It's obvious that sitting here trying to do this is a waste of time.  :-(

So that was today.

A couple of personal notes to readers.

Yesterday when I finished the day and was looking at the internet, I saw that I had 2 comments on my blog.  Excitement.  My blog friend Janet had commented on a couple of posts.  Today I was going to respond to one of the comments, but accidentally deleted it.  :-(

Anyway, Janet, I was going to say yes, it was very cool that the lady who does not usually ever speak, spoke up to say one of my drawings was pretty.  I was awed by that.

Another note to another blogger, Donna, something is messed up on your blog and I can't comment, so you might want to look into that.

And tomorrow we should be back on schedule to my Random Thoughts.

Another funny moment.

Okay, so the kids and I have been stuck in the house most of the winter.  It snowed at lot and my vehicle is 4 wheel drive, so 4 days a week, from 4 in the morning until 5:30 in the evening, we've been home without a car.  Then last weekend, my car broke down.  The transmission went out.  We had to borrow my mother-in-law's car and because our driveway still looked pretty much like this
Monday, when I took my mother-in-law's car to town to buy a few groceries and get my prescription filled, we had to park it at the bottom of the driveway and walk up.

On the way home from town, we had been talking about an article in this month's Family Fun magazine (I got a free subscription last year) about these 'time travel' vacations, where you pretend it is, for example, the 1600s and you live in an authentic house for a weekend, take care of animals, cook rustically and all that.  I was saying that it sounded like a lot of fun and I would sure like to do it.  Then we arrived at the bottom our this driveway (it's a hill and has a curve and is pretty long)  at 8:00 p.m. at night and had to walk up it, over ice and snow and slush, carrying groceries, in the dark with no flashlight.  At that point, I decided that going back into the past and having to walk long distances in the dark was not a fun idea for a vacation!  The kids laughed at me.  :-P

A read-aloud funny.

So last night, my daughter is reading the latest Artemis Fowl installment (downloaded from the virtual library onto my tablet, so not actually a book) and the phrase three thousand odd people came up as in 3000-odd people attended the opera.  She didn't say it with exactly the right emphasis and put the emphasis on odd.  It sounded funny.  I laughed and said "They were all odd?"  and my youngest son chimed in "What?  Did a bunch of homeschoolers show up?"

Read alouds.

As I may have mentioned, we have been doing read-alouds before bed every night forever.  When the last kid moves out, I may have to start babysitting or read to the dogs or something.  Actually, for the past year, since I have been art journaling, I haven't been doing the reading.  We have been either listening to audio books which we either check out of the library or download from our virtual library system.  This has been good for both the kids, because if my daughter doesn't know how to pronounce a word, she'll ask and my son and I both look at it and see if we know what it is.  On the rare occasions we don't (his vocabulary is extensive!) we look it up on Dictionary.com to get the meaning and the pronunciation.  It's cool living in this age where that is available.  Also, it is great to listen to an audio book for several reasons.  Those guys all do such a good job.  It's fun to listen to the accents.  As rural Kentuckians who have been listening to an Irishman reading recently, we've enjoyed how they put random Rs in places we wouldn't think to put them.  For example in the Artemis Fowl books, there is a character named Maria which is pronounced Mareer (rhymes with career) by the reader.  Last night when my daughter would read the book we are on, she would pause every time before she said Maria and smile.  Fun times.  Other fun times we have had is when I am reading and I get overly tired and start saying things wrong with hilarious results.  I personally have to pause when I am reading any of the Brotherband Chronicles books by John Flanagan because of the giant crossbow they have in the bow of the ship, causing me to have to stop and think weather I should say bow or bow ... which in turn has led to the discussion of homonyms and now that I am looking up the definition of that word, I see that we also need to discuss homophones and homographs.  I don't remember ever hearing of a homograph before.

Anyway, here is a list of books I recommend reading to your teens or tweens:

Series:
Harry Potter  (best ever).
Ranger's Apprentice  (a close second).
Brotherband Chronicles  (A very good sequel to Ranger's Apprentice with different characters but in the same world, very humorous.)
Peter and the Starcatchers (The first one starts out really slow but push through this, because it gets way better and very exciting further on)
Artemis Fowl (He starts out as a criminal mastermind but reforms gradually and goes straight.)
Lord of the Rings/Hobbit
Hank the Cowdog - Probably really for the younger kids but I enjoy these myself at my age.  Mostly.  The one about the vampire cat can grate on the nerves a bit (okay, a lot) and the one by Drover is not good.  Otherwise, the rest are cute.

Percy Jackson - As mentioned previously the books are way better than the movies.   It is an interesting premise, that the Greek gods are real and have all these illegitimate children  with mortals and if you are religious, you might want to reject these but as we have discussed, these Greek gods would be very unsatisfying gods to have as they are irresponsible, immoral, not trustworthy, etc.  Also, it is assumed that youngsters at 12 need to have a boyfriend/girlfriend, etc. which may make more conservative families reject these.  We have just discussed our feelings about that and went on.  The books are very educational about Greek/Roman mythology.  The companion series to these is
The Kane Chronicles - Very educational about the Egyptian mythology.
The 39 Clues.  Educational about a lot of stuff.  Reasonably enjoyable for all.

A Hero's Guide To Saving your Kingdom and The Hero's Guide Storming the Castle and the other one before that ... these were great.
Dragon Rider - not a series, just the one book.

Some that my youngest son enjoyed on his own, but his sister and I didn't not share his enthusiasm:
Deltora Quest
Eragon - series
Dragons in Our Midst

This should get you started.  If you read all of these, that's approximately 150 books.  You'd better get started NOW.

We find that a couple of chapters before bed every night is a great way to finish the day.

Movies and other things.

I've been trying to figure out what to blog about all day.  I am cleaning and screening a little, a technique where I clean a little bit then watch a little bit of TV.  It makes the cleaning seem not so bad.  Today,  I'm watching an episode of The Closer, which I really enjoy.  Speaking of watching things, last night we watched Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters.  We've read the books, so the glaring inconsistencies in the movie stand out.  Still, it was pretty good.  Some of the casting was great.  I enjoyed seeing Nathan Fillion as Hermes and the casting of Stanley Tucci (yes I had to look up his name) as Mr. D was genius.  He was perfect.  We enjoyed the movie for the most part.  I really wish movies could stay more like the books, but they just don't.  At least this time they kept the quest the same, which my children report they did not the last time.  Percy in the series is supposed to be 12 in the first book and they cast someone who looks about 16 or so.  My son said "He's going to be 35 before the prophecy comes true!"  I would like to go see the new Lego movie.  We may have to do that pretty soon.

In other news, I don't know if I have mentioned this, but I have been taking Dr. Christopher's Complete Tissue and Bone at the recommendation of another blogger and it has help immensely with my joint pain.  I am completely able to straighten out my left arm.   I do still have some pain, but I think it is about 80% better.  Maybe 90%.  It's awesome.  I was just Facebook messaging my oldest son and told him that I can walk pretty much like a normal person now.  :-)  Speaking of the oldest, he did not get in the southern snow storm and he finally got a workstudy job and it was exactly the one he wanted as one of his favorite professor's assistant.  I'm happy for him.  It's only 10 hours a week at minimum wage, but hey, that will take care of his Taco Bell expenditures   :-P  and give him a little spending money.  He's been very good about not spending excessive money and keeping his finances in control now that he's in charge of them and I am very proud of him for that.

Have a great day everyone!

Busy day.

We have been stuck at home so much this winter, we have just about gone stir crazy.  I have been art journaling up a storm.  The kids have been doing their stuff.  But today, we were so ready to go out.  The 7 or so families that make up our homeschool group were going to meet at Burger King today and hang out and a lot of them couldn't make it, but our family and 2 others trudged through the snow and made time for each other.  It was great.  I miss those people so much when I can't see them.  We figured out that it had been 5 weeks since we had seen them.  Whew.  That's too long.  So we went to hang out for a couple of hours, which was all one of the moms could fit in between homeschool and basketball practice for her son.

Then we went to the post office to mail a bunch of crocheted hats to my son so he can give them to his friends.  This is something he and his sister cooked up after she made him a hat and all his friends wanted one like it.

So then we went to the library and picked up a hold and got some reading/listening materials, which help with the staying at home all the time blues.

Then, we went to the grocery and came in under budget, woot, woot.   We had a funny moment in the grocery store, when my son went to get something in another aisle then came up behind me and said "That's one thing about having your custom hair colors, NOBODY else looks like you from the back."  LoL.  Hopefully my hair doesn't look too out there.  I'll have to get 2 mirrors and look at the back.  :-P

Then we went to see mom.  She seems happy enough, but her memory issues are worse due to the all upheaval that she has been through lately, moving twice since mid November.  I hope that once she settles in where she is that she will be more like herself, but she is happy and that is the main thing.  I took my most recent art journals in to show her and all of the ladies looked at them and said that they were pretty.  One of them who said they were pretty was one I didn't realize could talk.  I've never heard her say anything, but she said my art was pretty so that really made me feel good.

I had to work before we left and work after we left, but it was worth it.  It was a very productive and satisfying day.

Again with the snow.

It snowed again last night.  The county schools in our area are closed again.  We are going to do school today anyway.  I let them have a half of a snow day the first time it snowed, but we've had snow on the ground for so long now, it kind of seems ridiculous.  My son is coming home for spring break next month and bringing a friend from Alabama who has never seen snow and wants to, but it probably will all be gone by then.  I am torn between hoping it snows for my son's friend's sake next month when he comes and being so tired of it myself ... maybe we could save some in the freezer for him?  :-P

It will be the first time we've ever had an overnight guest for more than one night.  You know I have always been weird about sleep overs probably because I am such a total introvert, but we are trying to practice hospitality and I think it will be nice that my son has someone to ride with.  It's a long trip.   It will also be fun to meet one of my son's school friends.   My daughter says that she is going to laugh at how much cleaning I do that week versus how much cleaning I usually do, which admittedly, is not as much as should.   We are also going to try and get together with friends that week and show my son's friend around Kentucky a little bit.  I am not sure what that will entail, Mammoth Cave?  The Ohio river?    I might need to look back through my blog for field trip ideas.

Our driveway is not fun.

At the time of day I attempted to go down this, the snow had melted a little to show the solid ice underneath and make it slippier.

This is the creek right beside our driweway that I was afraid I'd end up in.
The sunset was pretty once we got out on the main road and I could look at it a little.

Working and schooling on Friday.

That's what we are doing.  I was able to go to the hospital last night and hold the babies.  They really needed me last night and it was kind of crazy busy.  I didn't spend any time stocking supplies, waiting around or taking any kind of a break.  I was holding babies the whole time.  That's the way I like it  because holding the babies is the best part.   It was fun and I wish I could go back tonight.  Tonight though, I will go see my mom and see how she is doing.  I haven't seen her since Tuesday when we were at the pain clinic.    I have gotten some phone reports.  She has seen her nurse practitioner who comes there to the house to examine all the residents once a month.  That's pretty cool.  I feel so much better about the care that mom is getting where she is now than where she was last month.  I wish we'd went there first, but the time did not work out for us very well and we just didn't know.  My brother actually said he would have liked to move mom there a couple of years ago so she would have understood more of what was going on and maybe coped with it better, also we would have never had to get involved with the caregiver we hired.  She could have stayed an acquaintance.  That would have been nice.  But hindsight is 20/20.  We did the best we could with the information that we had at the time and coped with everything as best we could.  Best you can do.

Mom's house this fall. :-(
Anyway, we're eating hamburgers and french fries and banana bread for dinner tonight and I wonder why I don't make banana bread every single day and have it for breakfast because it is just. so. good.  Yum.

Snow again.

This is the front yard this morning taken from the front porch..  It's snowing again.  I think it is beautiful and I really don't mind snow as long as I can go places whenever I want and we still have electricity.  Long time readers may notice our woodworking project chair on the left and Freckles is the small speck kind of right in the middle.  She's mostly white with dark colored spots, so she blends right into a landscape like this.  So today I'm going to cook and clean and then hopefully go to the hospital to volunteer.  I haven't been able to go for 2 weeks and I am missing the babies.  I applied for several jobs there, but did not get any of them.  I may need to go back to school and get some more training.  It's kind of annoying because I am very, very good at my current job, to have a computer take it over for the most part so that I am now obsolete.  Although, when I started medical transcription many years ago, people warned me that speech recognition was going to take over my job and I was able to get 19 good years out of it before that happened, so I guess I shouldn't complain.  ( I do though).  I should have made a plan for this.  I should already have some other kind of training or plan for what to do next but I don't.  :-(  Plan B?  C?  D?

On the homeschool front, we are still homeschooling, despite the snow.  We need to keep on oldest son's schedule if we want to take off and  have spring break with him.  We finished reading The Hero's guide to Storming the Castle, which is really cute and we are getting ready to read the next installment in the Artemis Fowl series.  Last night my youngest put a really cool stars/constellations ap on my tablet and we were looking at constellations, so that was education just happening, as it often does around here.

Also, my daughter finished her writing curriculum book and highly recommends it to everyone.  She really enjoyed it.    Here's a link.http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?subject=7&category=1599

I was sitting at the pain clinic.

So, while I was here, I decided to use my tablet to take pictures of some of my art journal pages.

While I was there I finished coloring in the letters on this one.

And finished coloring in the green on this one.

We weren't at the pain clinic as long as usual.  They were all trying to hurry so they could get home before the rain/snow/sleet mixture hit.  I asked them if I could get this kind of service next time and they looked a little sheepish.  They can do better, apparently.  The snow/sleet/rain mixture hit me on the way home.

This and that.

We have a pain clinic appointment today.  As always, I am kind of dreading it.  On the other hand, I haven't been spending as much time with mom lately, so I am kind of looking forward to spending more time with her.  The lady at the assisted living care home that she is in says that our visits are disrupting to mom, so we have all been visiting less.  There are a lot of people who love mom, so when I say that we are all visiting less, I mean she's down to maybe 10 visits from family members a week?  I am not sure what to do about this.  I don't want mom agitated, but I also don't want to not see her.  She's on an anti-anxiety medication now and that may help the situation.  I am also on the lookout for activities for her to do since she's having a hard time crocheting now.  :-(

The kids got caught being up and out of their rooms last night after 1:00 a.m. so they have double chores today.

We still have snow, so I am going to allow extra time to pick mom up and get to the clinic, so I'd better get going.

Have a great day everyone!

Snow!

The parking space for my Suburban.  It looks like most of the snow happened before my husband went to work at 5:00 a.m.

It looks like we got maybe 3 inches this time.  :-)

It says "In the begininning."

:-P

The process.

Here's a step by step art journal page.   I'm not all that pleased with it but it is okay.   I might be almost done with my journaling phase.  With all that I have been going through lately it has helped me to cope but I am thinking that maybe my busy life will resume soon and I will be too busy to do as much journaling.  I still may do it at night when my daughter is reading our read aloud.  Otherwise, I might have to take over the reading again, so she can knit or crochet.  :-P   Anyway, here's my process.
I randomly paint the pages using Crayola watercolors, then sometimes close the book on them while they are drying to make this weird effect.  Sometimes I get fancy with the painting, but not usually.

I then measured and drew a border.  I found in a lot of my free hand border making of the past that I was very, very crooked and sometimes I would end up with a really good drawing inside a really crooked border and it ruined all my good work in my opinion.

I free-handed some lettering and an arch shape.

Then I drew some flowers.  Flowers are what I like to draw.  Flowers and trees.  I have branched out in a couple and tried to draw birds, but I'm not that good of an artist.

I reached into my big bag of markers and pulled out random ones.  This is a huge old craft bag of my mom's and sometimes a marker lid will come off and the marker will saturate the bag with what looks like blood stains or something else, depending on the color.  I have tried other bags, but keep coming back to this one, even though it is ugly, I can separate markers for future use into the many pockets and also throw even my largest journals in there for carrying.  I sometimes journal at my daughter's piano lessons and at her craft sales.

I colored in the flowers and letters and drew a leaf border.
Then I hunted out all my greens.  I have a hard time keeping green markers because I use so much green.

Then I colored in the leafy border.  My daughter says it is too much green on this one and I think she's right.  I think some kind of blue border would have looked better.

Then I began the black outlining.  You can see if you look closely (sorry about the blurriness of this one) that it stops halfway through the top of the green squiggly line because 12:30 arrived last night and that was bedtime.

Have a good day everyone!
